Say or tell ? Say i tell překládáme jako říct. Pokud použijeme tell, uvádíme po tomto slovese ihned komu – jim, nám, jemu atd. Po say stává spíše “ that “ nebo komu s předložkou to – to us, to him atd. She told me/you/him/her/us/them/ that she would call at 2pm. She said that it was raining./She said to us that it was raining.

Say or tell? 1) He..... everybody that he had to do it. 2) Alice..... us that she was going to bed. 3) “We had never paid a fine for speeding”, they..... to us. 4) Jordan that he was tired. 5) “ I've already seen this film”, Mark......to me. 6) “ This joke made me laugh”, Susan..... to me.

Other reporting verbs said, told, wanted to know, pointed out, explained, wrote, complained, agreed,..... Po těchto slovesech používáme vedlejší větu (předmětnou), uvozenou spojkou THAT. Tato se často v hovorové angličtině vynechává. She answered (that) she had never wanted to study biology. Task: make sentences using these verbs.

Other reporting verbs accused, admitted, agreed, apologised, begged, boasted, complained, confessed, explained, offered, ordered, promised, replied, suggested.... Má-li hlavní i vedlejší věta stejný podmět, můžeme po těchto slovesech vedlejší větu zkrátit pomocí infinitivu. He promised to come home early.
