Countable nouns – C nouns singular (=one) C nouns can be: plural (=two or more) singular: a restaurant a meal a dish plural: restaurants meals dishes I’m going to a restaurant. singular: I’ll have a main dish. A meal tastes me. In big cities there are a lof of restaurants. plural: Czech dishes are tasty. Vegetarian meals are healthy.
Uncountable nouns – U nouns milk, water, sugar, salt, rice U nouns have only one form: We use for quantities: a jar of + U noun a cup of tea a tin of cola a bottle of wine a bar of chocolate a glass of water a slice of bread a piece of cheese a bowl of salad a loaf of bread a jar of honey
a/an + singular countable noun: an apple Some a banana a/an + singular countable noun: an apple some bananas some + plural countable nouns: some apples some cheese some + uncountable nouns: or a piece of cheese In a there are banana, some apples and some cheese (a piece of cheese). Would you like a banana, some apples or some cheese?
negative verb + any + plural nouns: In the fridge there aren’t any eggs. negative verb + any + uncountable noun: There isn’t any sugar in coffee. negative verb + a/an + singular noun: There ins’t a lemon / an orange on the table.
