Body Language – Intercultural Differences

If you are a visitor to some foreign country, you should definitely follow customs and common habits in the countries you are visiting. It is not only polite, but also something what is expected from you as a guest. So, if you are either a traveller or a businessman, follow the rules and have respect for habits of local people.

Bulgaria When they say YES – When they say NO - they shake their heads they nod

Japan You mustn´t blow your nose in public You mustn´t kiss anybody in public When they meet somebody, even a friend or a person they know well – they bow

Thailand You mustn´t pat anybody on the head – even a child You must remove your shoes before entering a house You mustn´t let your feet point to anybody When eating, they usually use chopsticks, less often a spoon and a fork, but never a knife.

Vietnam You must eat everything on your plate You mustn´t use your finger to beckon somebody You mustn´t talk with your mouth full

Muslim countries You mustn´t eat with your left hand You needn´t use knife and fork to eat – you can use fingers You can belch at the table – it is considered a thanks to the hostess You must take off your shoes when entering a mosque or a house

Muslim countries When male friends meet, they kiss each other 4 times It is quite common to see walking two men in the street holding their hands It is not allowed to touch a woman in the street In some countries women are alloweed to walk out only accompanied by some male relative Women are not allowed to show their hair, sometimes even face in public

Australia Men mustn´t wink at women When taking a taxi – In the restaurant after a meal - you are expected to sit in the front seat, not in the back it is polite to leave a big tip

Peru When eating you mustn´t put your hands under the table You must wait until everyone has a drink before drinking You must say „buen provecho“ when you leave the table

Japan When you are invited for a meal – In your host´s house you aren´t allowed to see – When eating from small bowls, you must lift the bowl up to your mouth - a kitchen you should bring a gift so that you don´t drop any food

Japan When you drink soup, you needn´t drink it quietly. You mustn´t pour a drink for yourself – you must wait for someone else to pour it and in return - it is OK to make quite a loud noise you must pour drinks to other people
