2 TRANSISTORS 4 Distribution of transistors according to performance
Conventional transistors : - usually process a signal in units of volts. - Current is maximum in the order of milliamps Medium-performance transistors: - work mostly in the linear regime, for example, they are used for linear voltage regulators, or for power levels for audio amplifiers. Power transistors : - in a switching mode it works with a voltage (tens of kilovolts) and currents of hundreds or thousands of amperes.

Conventional transistors are used: - for signal processing as individual "discrete" components - parts in chips and microchip integrated circuits, are today an essential element of the consuming and non-consuming electronics (televisions, radios, computers, mobile phones ...)

Power transistors are used: – are a key element used in power electronics, (switching power supplies or frequency converters.) --- - modern light sources - hybrid cars and electric vehicles - photovoltaic and wind power
