London is the capital city of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It lies in the south-east of England, on both banks of the River Thames. Its area covers about 1.6 square kilometres. The total number of inhabitants in London and its suburbs is approximately 12 million of people. London is the seat of many important institutions. In that period it became the main trading centre. In the Shakespearean era London became the prosperous capital city of Britain. During the Great Fire of London in 1666 AD most houses in the city were destroyed because they were made of wood. In the 19 th century (during the industrial revolution) London was the biggest and the most important city in the world. During World War II, in 1940, London was bombed and damaged by the German Army. In 2012 London is the first city in the world to host the Olympic Games three times. On the other hand it is the oldest and most modern borough at the same time. There are lots of banks, offices of the multinational companies, and the stock exchange.  St. Paul´s Cathedral 1 - destroyed by the Great Fire in 1666 - rebuilt again by Sir Christopher Wren Tower of London - used to be the royal palace of William the Conqueror - during Henry VIII´s reign it was used as a prison, and many people died there - nowadays it is a museum and jewel house - The Tower of London is guarded by Beefeaters  Tower of London 2 EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0154 6

The most famous London´s park, Hyde Park, is located here. One part of the Hyde Park is called the speakers´ corner. It´s an open-air area dedicated to public and political speech and debates.  London´s Hyde Park 8 East End With the growing population in the 19 th century it became home for the poor.
