Characteristics
What is a characteristics It is a description of specific features of a person. Usually it includes also evaluating. So we give information about a person and we evaluate her/him. For the purpose of the final examination we usually choose a person, who we admire, one of our heroes, representatives.
Types of characteristics What do we describe? Appearance – what does the person look like. Character – the person’s behaviour, his personality. How can we do it? Direct characterisation – you speak directly about the character of a person.He is honest. Indirect characterisation – you describe the character with describing his actions. He always tells the truth.
How to organise the text? The title Introduction Main body Conclusion Name of the text Depends on the task, is separated from the text, could be placed in the middle of the line General information name, age, residence, origin, job Relationship of the writer to this person teacher, brother, coach Description of the person (could be divided into two paragraphs): appearance, clothing, habits, interests, behaviour, skills, character Characteristics of the relationship, evaluating, we write why do we identify/not identify with him/her
Writing tips Think of a good title, related to the task and the person being described. Put the title in the middle of the first line, use capital letters in the beginning of each word, except for prepositions and articles. Divide the main body of the text into two paragraphs. In the first describe the appearance, in the second the character. Mention the positive and negative aspects of his character. Important part of the last paragraph is evaluating. Write your personal opinion on this person.
Writing tips Use semiformal style. Do not use too long and complicated sentences. Use various modal verbs: Do not forget to use adjectives best, smart, funny, typical, reliable, trustworthy, stubborn and adverbs well, absolutely, badly, fast, horribly, slowly.
