Habitual actions – in the present The present simple – Whenever I go to town I spend too much money. Tend to – She tends to get up late at weekends. Will – He'll sit for hours watching TV. Usual way of expressing present habitual actions or permanent situations Tend to + infinitive can be used to refer to generally occurring actions Sometimes used instead of present simple to refer to behavior which is characteristic of a person
Habitual actions in the past Past simple – I usually got home late. Used to – Before I had a car, I used to cycle to work. Would – Every summer they would take us to the seaside. Describes habitual action when accompanied by a frequency expression. Refers to past action which no longer happen or vice versa. Not used in questions and negatives and only refers to actions, not situations.
