3 Adjectives Některá anglická přídavná jména mají své „silné ekvivalenty“ funny, big, small, cold, atd. mají obyčejný význam můžeme je stupňovat, abychom jim dodali na důrazu (big - bigger – the biggest)

4 as …. as Katie is as tall as her sister. Sadie is as pretty as Katie. 2/ comparing two things: The baby is not as happy as the girl. The baby has not got as long hair as her older sister. Katie Sadie 1/ When the things have same characteristics

5 Comparative and superlative Most adjectives are gradable: 1/ regular small – smaller – the smallest expensive – more expensive – the most expensive 2/ irregular bad- worse – the worst Ex. She is the smartest girl in the class. She is smaller than me.

7 Někdy je ale potřeba použít výraznějšího zdůrazněného / přehnaného výrazu. Tehdy použijeme jejich silné ekvivalenty. V češtině tato přídavná jména máme také: ex.: Něco je velké (big), a něco je obrovské (huge). Něco může být dobré (good), a něco vynikající (excellent).

10 Grammar: absolute adjectives Nemají druhý a třetí stupeň Nelze je používat s jistými příslovci (very, extremely, fairly, slightly apod.) Nelze tedy říci: This book is excellent, but that book is even more excellent. Jako druhý a třetí stupeň silných přídavných jmen se používá druhý a třetí stupeň jejich slabých ekvivalentů: huge - bigger – the biggest excellent - better – the best fascinating - more interesting – the most interesting
