2 1) The flag of IRELAND The flag of Ireland. Irish flag (the mid-19 th century) consists of three vertical stripes in colours: green, white and orange. Green, on the left side, is the colour of the Irish Catholic majority. Orange, on the right, is the colour of Protestant. White colour, in the middle of them, represents the space needed between these two groups. 4 3) IRELAND – basic information Ireland is a country in northwest Europe. It is bordered by Northern Ireland in the north, Atlantic Ocean in the west, the east belongs to Irish Sea and Celtic Sea is in the south. Ireland neighbours with the Great Britain. It is the second largest of the British Isles. Its surface is mostly lowland. Ireland’s longest river is the River Shannon (386 km). The official languages are Irish and English, where English dominates. The most important agricultural sector is a traditional breed of sheep. Sheep’s wool is exported to other countries. This is explained by the legend of St. Patrick, the saint patron of Ireland, who banished all the snakes from this island. In honour of St. Patrick every year on the 17 th March is celebrated around the world – St. Patrick’s Day. Irish traditional instrument is violin. Irish people are very musical nation. They like playing the violins or flutes, they adore also dancing and singing.
