For Czechs, December 24 is the most important day of Christmas holidays In Czech the literal translation is Generous Day as in the past it was customary to have a wealth of food and feed for people and animals as well A public holiday and a day off for most people Some people might attend the Midnight Mass

CHRISTMAS DINNER Obr.1 Dinner is served after sunset
Typically consists of fried carp or Wiener schnitzel with potato salad as a side dish and fish or mushroom soup

CHRISTMAS TREE Obr. 2 It is usually brought home a few days before Christmas Day Most popular species include pine or spruce On December 24 in the morning the family gathers to decorate it with traditional ornaments

BABY JESUS Obr. 3 Czech children believe that Christmas presents are brought by Baby Jesus-a 19th century tradition originally from Germany Wish list letters are sent to him a few weeks before Christmas Nobody knows where he lives Typical image of Baby Jesus is an angel-like baby boy

Presents are usually placed under the Christmas tree after dinner When the dinner is over and washing up has been done, everyone moves to the Christmas tree to unwrap the presents Typical presents include toys, clothes, electronics or gift vouchers
