3 James Fenimore Cooper a prolific American writer and founder of the American novel contributed a lot to American literature: frontier life, character of Natty Bumppo born on September 15, 1789 in New Jersey at the age of eleven, he moved to a frontier town of Cooperstown in New York studied at Yale but expelled: as a result, a lifelong dislike to New Englanders In 1806 Cooper joined the Navy (important experience for some of his later novels) married Susan Augusta De Lancey, who later bet him that he was capable of writing a book better than the one she was reading: Precaution: a novel dealing with morals and manners founded the Bread and Cheese Club: brought together important painters and writers of the time at the time of his death his popularity was greater abroad than in America: many European writers (Leo Tolstoy or Honore de Balsac) greatly influenced by his work popular but critisised as well: Mark Twain΄s Fenimore Cooper΄s Literary Offenses 1

stands at the beginning of the American novel his central character Natty Bumpoo represents a real spirit of American hero the first one to raise conversation questions and draws attention to the destruction of wildlife offers an interesting depiction of American past points out a cultural conflict: Indians vs. settlers

written between a series of separate stories featuring the main hero of Nutty Bumppo – called "Leatherstocking" by settlers and "Deerslayer", "Pathfinder" or "Hawkeye" by Indians a real American hero: can survive in wilderness, excited about adventures, not afraid to face death, believes in fair play and chivalry to women accompanied by his Indian friend Chingachgook a wilderness character of Nutty Bumppo first introduced in The Pioneers and gained remarkable public popularity encouraging Cooper to write other sequels unfolding Nutty Bumppo΄s life Leatherstocking Tales won Cooper fame not only in America but also in Europe
