-před počitatelným podstatným jménem v jednotném čísle - mluvíme o této věci nebo osobě poprvé - mluvíme o věci nebo osobě obecně - označujeme čím nebo kým je věc nebo osoba - užíváme vazbu there is / there are EXAMPLES I‘ve got a car. Countries - jsou v množ. čísle, nebo se skládají z více slov the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic River, sea, oceans – the Thames, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic Mountains ( plural ) – the Alps, the Himalayas Islands – the Bahamas Deserts- the Sahara Hotels, cinemas, theatres , museums – The Grand Hotel, the Natural History Museum, the Victoria Palace Theatre

( o vodě, o žirafách, o autech, počasí, apod) Water is wet. - Voda je mokrá, mluvím o vodě obecně. (ale: THE water is cold today - dnes je voda studená - myslím tím konkrétní vodu v jezeře či v bazénu.) Giraffes have long necks. - mluvím obecně o žirafách We had awful weather on holiday
