Devils in the Czech Republic
Costumes During the day usually nothing happens, the families watch TV, go for walks and enjoy family comfort Teenagers or adults go to different shops to borrow costumes for the evening
Roles Devil – He scares because of his terrible appearance, it´s a symbol of evil, he usually carries a sack and pushes the naughty kids into it to get them to the hell
Angel – Symbol of goodness
Saint Nicholas – He is very generous and helpful. If the children were good all the year, he gives them sweets or fruit, but if they were naughty, he gives them a piece of coal or potatoes.
Evening In the evening, the family is together, they are talking and waiting for the arrival of devils. When the devils come, the children begin to worry. Children must perform some songs or poems to Saint Nicholas, then he gives them the presents.
Evening They see if children were worthy or naughty. It is decided by the devil and an angel. Finally, children are endowed with sweets, fruit, and get some coal. Children thank and unwrap their gifts. And so the evening ends.
