Third Conditional Reflects or expresses an alternative solution of a situation different from reality. The condition is expressed by means of: IF + SUBJECT + HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE The possible aftereffect is expressed by the following grammatical means: SUBJECT + WOULD / COULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
Third Conditional Things happen in their own way … Sometimes we can think of a different development if they had happened another way. We may feel sorry for a moment that occured in the past and speculate what would / could have happened instead. Be careful: I had = I‘d I would = I‘d
Compare the reality and the third conditional. They bought a used car and it kept breaking down. If they hadn‘t bought the car they wouldn‘t have had so many troubles with it. They did not know all the facts so they made a wrong decision. If they had known all the facts they would not have adopted such a bad decision.
A few more examples: If I had had more information about this school I would have never enrolled it. If I had known her better I would have never asked her to marry me. If I had studied harder I would have passed all my exams without much difficulty. If he had learnt German perfectly he could have found a well paid job in Germany. If I had sold my old car I would not have had to get it fixed again. If it hadn‘t rained at the weekend we would have travelled to the sea.
Wish clauses in the past are similar to third conditional. In fact they represent an alternative to the reality. I wish I had learnt harder. I had been nicer to Julia. I had not started to smoke those days. I had not been rude to my parents. I had not told off the teachers. I had met you before … I had not been drinking so much.
WORKSHEET A short translation cannot do any harm …
WORKSHEET And a few wishes that never came true … Kéž bych si toho všiml dříve … Kéž by mi tenkrát nelhal … Kdyby si tak natankovala plnou nádrž … Kéž by na nás měli tenkrát rodiče víc času … Kdybych tak nikdy nezačal kouřit …
WORKSHEET Possible solutions: If had known it I would have never done that. If she had known him better she would have never married him. If she had learnt Chinese she could have got the job in Beijing. If they had bought a new car they would not have had so many problems. If he had not drunk at the party so much he would have felt better. If I had known how bad it was I would have never ordered it. If I had studied harder I would have passed my tests. If we had tried to open the door again we could have escaped earlier. If the phone had worked, we could have phoned someone. If the restaurant had not been so expensive we would not have gone to the fast food and I would not have felt so miserable later. And a few wishes that never came true … I wish I had noticed that earlier... I wish he had not lied to me … If only she had filled up her car tank … If only our parents had had more time for us … I wish I had never started smoking …
