MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY the third Monday in January He was a black clergyman who fought for civil rights for his people. Preaching nonviolence as Gandhi he tried not to consider the black as second-class citizens. He was assassinated in 1968.

EASTER Many homes organize Easter egg hunt. Children look for hard-boiled eggs hidden around the house. The president himself has annual Easter egg hunt on the lawn around the White House.

THANKSGIVING DAY every fourth Thursday in November It remembers the first settlers – Pilgrim Fathers who came in The whole family gathers together and enjoys a traditional dinner – roast turkey, apple or pumpkin pie etc.

HALLOWEEN the last day of October Children dress in funny or ghostly costumes and knock at neighbourhood doors. After shouting “Trick or Treat!” they are given gifts or candy.

CHRISTMAS Traditions are observed. Santa Claus is pictured as a cheerful fat man with long white beard, dressed in a red suit. He visits homes of good children on the night before Christmas and leaves them gifts. There is a tradition of leaving a glass of milk and chocolate cookies for his reindeer.
