Parts of speech Prepositions

Position 1. In so called wh-questions: Who were you talking to? (informal) To whom were you talking? (formal) Which house did you leave it at? (informal) At which house is he staying? (formal) 2. In some exclamations: What a mess he has got into! He is impossible to work with.

Position 3. In several idiomatic usages such as: …all the world over… …search the house through… 4. In relative clauses: The old house (which) I was telling you about is empty. (formal) The old house about which I was telling you is empty. (informal)

The meaning The preposition indicate various relationships between words or phrases. The most usual are time, space (position) and mental or emotional attitudes. I saw him on Monday, in October, at seven o’clock.

Position in place 1) A point (a place or an event): at the cinema; at a party; to/from London. We stood at the door and waited. 2) A line (a place we think of in term of lenght): across; along; on a border; on a corner. There is a letter box across the road. 3) A surface (a place we think of as a flat area): across;off/on a table/floor/wall. She saw the picture on the wall.

Direction to, towards, into, along, through, across, on, by, before, over, round, under, out of, from. They went to school. They came from school. I put the small change into my pocket. We ran out of the building.

Time AT Exact time: at 10 o’clock. Meal time: at lunch time; at tea time. Other points of time: at noon; at midnight. Festivals: at Christmas; at Easter. Age: at the age of 27; at 14. With time: at that time, at this time.

Time ON Days: on Monday. Parts of the day: on Monday morning. Dates: on July 2nd. Festivals: on Christmas Day. Anniversaries: on your birthday.

Time IN Months: in March. Parts of the day: in the evening. Festivals: in Easter week. Years: in Seasons: in (the) winter. Centuries: in the 20th century.
