Parts of speech Prepositions
Position 1. In so called wh-questions: Who were you talking to? (informal) To whom were you talking? (formal) Which house did you leave it at? (informal) At which house is he staying? (formal) 2. In some exclamations: What a mess he has got into! He is impossible to work with.
Position 3. In several idiomatic usages such as: …all the world over… …search the house through… 4. In relative clauses: The old house (which) I was telling you about is empty. (formal) The old house about which I was telling you is empty. (informal)
The meaning The preposition indicate various relationships between words or phrases. The most usual are time, space (position) and mental or emotional attitudes. I saw him on Monday, in October, at seven o’clock.
Position in place 1) A point (a place or an event): at the cinema; at a party; to/from London. We stood at the door and waited. 2) A line (a place we think of in term of lenght): across; along; on a border; on a corner.
