Obsahuje jednak přehled faktografických údajů, tak i anglickou ustálenou terminologii, doplněné o interaktivní cvičení: doplňovací cvičení, rozhovory s diskuzí na dané téma (role-play). Je primárně zaměřen na dva poslední ročníky gymnázia, i přesto se dá využít i v nižších ročnících osmiletého i čtyřletého studia vcelku nebo jeho jednotlivé části. DISCUSSION Discuss in pairs: What is a crime? How many law breakers can you name? What do you know about punishment?

CRIME is one of society’s oldest problems a violation of criminal law countries vary greatly in their definitions Conditions that affect the amount of crime also vary from one society to another They may include the proportion of urban population, the proportion of young and old people in the society, and the degree of conflict among various cultural, economic and racial groups.

OFFENCES Indictable offences: Statutory offences: include major crimes such as arson, assault, burglary, kidnapping, murder, assassination,rape, robbery and theft are generally punished by long terms of imprisonment, by death penalty/capital punishment Statutory offences: are minor offences include acts that cause annoyance to the public, most traffic offences and minor cases of dishonesty are generally punished by fines and court orders/ community service  

CATEGORIES against people against property against public order and public morality - assault, kidnapping, murder and sexual attacks arson, burglary, forgery, fraud, theft, vandalism and embezzlement   disorderly conduct, illegal gambling, prostitution or public drunkenness

CLASSIFICATION Crimes can be classified in various ways: organized crime white-collar crime political crime computer crime providing illegal goods and services, gambling, prostitution, the illegal sale of drugs and loan sharking - cheating in tax payments, petty thefts as well as large-scale stock market swindles - acts of terrorism, assassinations of leading political figures, plane hijacking and bombing - a criminal has obtained passwords to access important restricted data (e.g. fraud or theft)

DISCUSSION Discuss in pairs what punishment to give the criminal: How to punish thieves who attacked an old lady and stole her purse? How to punish a person who drank and caused a car accident and killed a 13-year boy? How to punish murderers who raped and then killed 2 young girls and committed the crime several times? Are you for or against the death penalty?

PUNISHMENT community service fine sentence life sentence / life imprisonment death sentence - work helping people in the local community that sb does without being paid because they have been ordered to by a court as a punishment (e.g. cleaning, painting, sweeping roads and pavements) - a sum of money that must be paid as punishment for breaking a law or rule - is the punishment given by a court e.g. jail/prison s., a light/heavy sentence, life sentence, death sentence - is the punishment by which sb spends the rest of their life in prison - is the legal punishment of being killed for a serious crime  

PUNISHMENT Capital punishment is the legal killing of a person for a crime they have been proved in a court of law to have committed USA: the death penalty is used in 38 states will be used:- ethal injection(poisonous chemical) - the electric chair - hanging, a firing squad - the gas chamber is passed on people found guilty of murder People argue that it is immoral and that if a mistake is made it cannot be put right. does not prevent people from committing murder

PUNISMENT Capital punishment Britain for murder was abolished in 1965 but it can still be passed on anyone found guilty of treason (= crimes against the state) Some British people think that the death penalty should be brought back for crimes such as terrorism (= the use of violence for political aims) or the murder of a police officer but Parliament has voted several times against this.  

DUTIES OF THE POLICE they investigate various cases they arrest / make arrests and question crime suspects (video) they carry out a search of a building they check out sb’s alibi they search for clues / murder weapons, etc. and provide evidence to the court they take statements from witnesses they help find missing people they patrol streets to prevent crimes they ensure safety on the roads they direct traffic they keep people at a police station hold information about people and their criminal records in many countries they carry guns in other words: they make people obey the law and to prevent and solve crime Motto: Help (serve) and protect

DISCUSSION Discuss in pairs: How to protect our own safety, our homes and property? Write down as many examples as you can.

CRIME PREVENTION The police: should be given more time for crime prevention should visit schools more money should be spent on advertising should be better educated should be better equipped and coordinated 

CRIME PREVENTION Ordinary people: should be taught how to protect their own safety, their homes and property e.g. leave lights on in some rooms when they go out, watch the other houses in the street when people are not at home, check whether all windows and doors are locked have mobile phones with them, do not leave expensive gadgets inside cars at night, have a dog in the garden, have their house equipped with the burglar alarm, should not have large amounts of money at home, put expensive and valuable things – e.g. jewellery, documents, etc. into a safe

Answer these questions and express your opinion. 1) Have you ever been robbed/burgled/mugged? 2) Are you for or against the death penalty? 3) What classification and categories of crime can you name? 4) What kind of punishment do you know? 5) How many law breakers can you name? 6) Write down the main duties of the police. 7) How to protect yourself and your property against crime? 8) How to recognize that somebody is being bullied? How to help?
