CHRISTMAS is the day when Christ was born. It is the biggest festival of the year. Xmas also means Christmas. The name Christmas comes from the Mass of Christ. The night of the 24th is a quiet time which is usually spent with the family and very close friends, talking and drinking wine and eating too many sweets. It´s called Christmas Eve. Children believe that Father Christmas ( or Santa Claus) comes on his sledge pulled by his reindeer, enters the house through the chimney and puts the children´s presents into their stockings.Father Christmas comes when everyone's asleep. Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. The day is called Christmas Day. This is when it gets to the fun part - opening presents! The dinner on Christmas day is the most important meal of the year. The British usually have roast turkey served with a lot of vegetables, like roast potatoes, turnips, cauliflower and broccoli, with gravy, mint or cranberry sauce followed by Christmas pudding (plum pudding). Christmas dinners in England have to come with Christmas crackers - they are tubes of cardboard that look like sweets. To open them you need to pull the two ends apart and that's when they should open with a little bang! In the old days, people went around to other people's houses on that day asking for food or money.
New Year´s Eve in Scotland is called Hogmanay. All over Britain there are parties, fireworks, singing and dancing. As the clock Big Ben strikes midnight, people link arms and and sing a song called Auld Lang Syne. It reminds them of old and new friends. On New year´s Day the British have a tradition of “first footing“ – the first person to enter the house should be a dark-haired man. If not, one can expect bad luck in the coming year. People in the UK love to enjoy every minute of the going year. Parties, dance and live performances are some of the events of New Year.
