3 Students´Day In October 1939 a quiet demonstration took place in Prague to remind the Czechoslovak Independence Day the demonstration was violently suppressed by the police and SS units a medical student Jan Opletal was shot and killed

4 Students´Day on the day of his funeral – hundreds people and students demonstrated again the demonstration changed into the protest against the Naci the protest culminated on 17th November The Germans violently suppressed it again

5 Students´Day The Gestapo and SS units attacked student hostels arrested more than 1200 students took them to concentration camps nine leading students were executed in Ruzyně without trial

6 Students´ Day Adolf Hitler ordered the closing of colleges in the country in London in 1941 – an international student meeting took place International Student´s Day was proclaimed

7 Fifty years later… On 17 November 1989 a student march was organized to remind 50th aniversary student demonstration against the Nazi occupation it turned into anti-Comunist and government protest a peaceful demonstration was violently suppressed by the police

8 Next days… following mass protests were held in several cities public discussions were held The Civic Forum was established as a group of speakers of democratic movement the leader Václav Havel

9 Velvet Revolution The Civic Forum issued a declaration of its demands to the government 75 % of the Czech population supported the demands by the general strike In December Václav Havel became the president of free Czechoslovac country

10 November 17 has been named Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day it honours: – the students demonstration against the Nazi in 1939 – the protest against the Comunists in 1989
