4 Electricity Electricity is a form of energy that can produce light, heat and power for machines, computer, etc. Electricity arrives at our homes through wires from the power station or power plant where it is made. Obr. 1 Electricity is used by electric lamps for producing light, by many devices such as washing machines, electric cookers, cars, etc. In factories, electricity is used for running machines and computers.

5 Thermal plants use burning coal. Hydroelectric power stations use flowing water. Solar power stations use sunshine. Wind power plants use wind turbines. Nuclear power plants use heat from nuclear reactions. A power station is a place where electricity is produced. Power stations can do this in many ways: Power station Obr. 2

6 Electricity in nature We can see electricity in nature as lightning during a thunderstorm. Obr. 3 Lightning is a large electrical discharge and thunder is the sound that comes from the rapid spread of air along the lightning strike. Question: Why is thunder slower than lightning? Because light is faster than sound.

9 Electrical system in cars An automotive battery is a type of rechargable battery that supplies electric energy to an automobile. Usually this refers to an SLI battery (starting, lighting, ignition) to power the starter motor, the lights, and the ignition system of a vehicle’s engine. 10 A spark plug Electronic ignition system [1] Today all cars have electronic ignition system. The ignition system provide the spark that gets a car started and keeps it going. It begins at the battery and ends at the spark plug. When the driver turns the ignition key, it activates the battery and sends a signal to the starter motor. Obr. 7
