New Zealand is situated Southeast of Australia - two large islands, North and South, Area - about 268 000 sq.km The country - hilly and picturesque with rocks, volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers. Characteristic feature: evergreen forests and moderate climate

Fiordland national park – UNESCO World Heritage site the largest in NZ and one of the largest In the world. Many fjords(created by glaciers) lakes, valleys, mountains.. Wildlife – dolphins, kiwi, kakapo, seals. Popular destination for alpine climbers.

Tongariro national park – UNESCO World Heritage site Landscape – volcanic origin 3 volcanoes The mountain summits are important to the local Māori. Flora – rain forest – ferns, Fauna – many endemic species e.g. kiwis, wetas, many kinds of birds

3. What animals are typical of New Zealand? Kiwis - birds with a long narow beak with nostrils at the tip mountain parrots – Kakapo, the world's largest insect – Giant weta up to 20 cm long Tuatara - a reptile (its ancestors were prehistoric dinosaurs)
