Question tags Generally, a positive sentence has a negative question tag … She likes it, doesn‘t she? … and a negative sentence has a positive question tag. She doesn‘t need it, does she?

Question tags. Question tags in positive sentences are usually negative: You live in Prague, don‘t you? She is blonde, isn‘t she? They were on holiday in Spain, weren‘t they? He did it himself, didn‘t he? They have lived here for a long time, haven‘t they? The train had left before the arrived, hadn‘t it? They are going to get married in June, aren‘t they? She will help us with our homework, won‘t she? She could have come, couldn‘t she. I am being stupid, aren‘t I.

Question tags in negative sentences. Question tags in negative sentences are usually positive: It is not too late, is it? You don‘t drink beer every night, do you? She doesn‘t like us, does she? You haven‘t got a car, have you? They did not arrive on time, did they? She wasn‘t waiting for a long time, was she? He hasn‘t done much of his homework, has he? You haven‘t been sitting at the Internet for too long, have you? The train hadn‘t left before they arrived at the station, had it? He isn‘t going to marry her, is he? You wouldn‘t say that, would you. He won‘t come on his own, will he?

Exceptions in question tags. I am …………, aren‘t I? Let‘s ………….., shall we? Do / Don‘t ………., will you?

Pronunciation of question tags. The way you pronounce a question tag is important for the listener to fully understand your intentions. If you really want to ASK a question, GO UP WITH YOUR VOICE. If you only want to make sure or look for a consent, GO DOWN WITH YOUR VOICE.
