Prehistoric Britain (8000 BC – 500 BC) Britain used to be joined to Europe and became an island 8000 years ago first inhabitants were farmers, they made tools and weapons from stone, bronze and iron Stonehenge was completed roads and villages were formed the Celts arrived from Europe

The Celts (500 BC - 410 BC) arrived from central Europe settled in southern England originally were pagan with priests – Druids were farmers and warlike people fought against the people of Britain and other Celtic tribes were famous artists - sophisticated designs in jeweleries, crosses and manuscripts

The Romans (55 BC -41 AD) invaded southern Britain which become the part of the Roman Empire set up their capital in London built a network of roads, squares, villas, public baths and towns influenced strongly the Celts culture built towns – Bath, Chester, York built Hadrian Wall – a long wall to defend the border between England and Scotland

Anglo Saxons and Vikings (5th – 11th century) Germanic tribes invaded south-east England the Saxons, later the Jutes and Angles the Angles gave the name to England they introduced a new culture one of the most civilized country in Europe organized system of agriculture and trade Vikings settled mainly in Scotland and Ireland were excellent traders and navigators

The Normans (11 th – 15th century) William the Conqueror become a king of England England - a strong, centralized country under military rule impressive castles and monasteries were built – the Tower of London, Oxford University was founded The Magma Carta is signed The Hundred-Year' War with France the first Black Death pandemic

The Tudors (16th century) Henry VIII – a well educated and strong king known for his six wives established the Church of England united England and Wales Elisabeth I – known as the Virgin Queen ruled 45 years - the Golden Age of English history stabilized the country encouraged colonization and trade expansion

The Victorians The Queen Victoria - ruled 64 years the age of Industrial Revolution towns and cities got piped water, gas and later electricity Britain became the most powerful and richest country in the world
