18 4) A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens a) Read this story and try to understand what about is it: It was Christmas eve, and Ebenezer scrooge was sitting in his cold office. In the next room, his clerk, bob cratchit, was working. His office was even colder. “MERRY Christmas, uncle!”, Cried a happy voice. It was scrooge´s nephew, fred. “humbug!”, said scrooge. He was a mean, cold-hearted old man and he hated Christmas. Fred invited him for dinner on Christmas day, but scrooge said no. fred left and two other gentlemen came in. they were collecting money for poor people, but scrooge didn´t give them anything. At last it was time to close the office. Scrooge then went home to his cold, dark house. That night, as scrooge was eating a bowl of soup, he heard a strange noise. Someone was pulling heavy chains across the floor. Suddenly, a ghost walked straight through his door. It was Jacob marley, scrooge´s old business partner. “marley!”,cried scrooge, ”but you died seven years ago.” Yes, said the ghost, and for seven years I have carried these chains that I made in my lifetime. I can´t rest because I was never good or kind when I was alive.” But what do you want here?, said scrooge. 19 I am here to warn you. You still have a chance to save yourself. Three spirits will visit you. Then, the ghost disappeared. Scrooge fell asleep quickly and during this night three spirits visited him. Each one took scrooge on a journey. The firs spirit was the ghost of Christmas past. He took scrooge back to a time when he was a boy. Christmas was a happy time for him. But as he got older, he started to love money more than people. Finally, he lost all his friends and also his fiancée. He became a mean, lonely old man. The second visitor was the ghost of Christmas present. he took scrooge to see bob cratchit and his family. They were very poor because scrooge didn´t pay bob very much. They only had a small chicken for Christmas dinner, but they were laughing – even tiny tim, bob´s son, who was very ill. Scrooge felt ashamed. The cratchits were enjoying Christmas even though they were poor. He had lots of money, but he was mean and unhappy. The last spirit was the ghost of the future. He showed scrooge the future Christmas time – and it was a terrible view. Tiny Tim was dead because his parents couldn´t afford medicine for him. Someone else was dead, too. The spirit showed Scrooge the dead man´s grave. On it was his name, Ebenezer scrooge. 20 Scrooge was terrified. “spirit, listen! I have learned my lesson. Please tell me that I can change my future. Please, please!” The spirit didn´t reply, but suddenly, scrooge was back in his bed. He jumped up and ran to the window. “what day is it?” he called to a boy in the street. “today?” replied the boy in great surprise. “why, it´s Christmas day!” “so, I haven´t missed it”, thought scrooge. “god bless you, Jacob marley. And god bless Christmas!” From that moment, scrooge was a different man. First, he sent an enormous turkey to the cratchits. Then he went out into the street, and said “merry Christmas” to everyone that he met. As he was walking along, he saw the gentlemen who had come to his office, and he promised to give them a lot of money for the poor people. His nephew, fred, and his wife were surprised, when scrooge arrived for Christmas dinner. After Christmas, scrooge didn´t go back to his mean old ways. He doubled bob cratchit´s wages and helped tiny tim (who didn´t die). He had no more visits from spirits. He was always cheerful at Christmas and lived happily for the rest of his life. It took Scrooge to see Bob Cratchit and his family. It was The Present Time.
