3 General information  We use a number of words in front of common nouns. my house; one book; an apple; these boys; etc.  We call them determiners. They determine the meaning.  Singular countable nouns MUST normally have a determiner in front of them.

4 Determiners 1. Words which help us to classify or identify: a)Indefinite article: I bought a new shirt yesterday. b)Definite article: The shirt I’m wearing is new. c)Demonstratives: I bought this/that shirt yesterday. d)Possessives: Do you like my new shirt?

5 Determiners 2. Words which help us to indicate quantity: a)Numbers: I bought two new shirts yesterday. b)Quantifiers: I didn’t buy many new shirts yesterday and I didn’t even buy any new skirts. There wasn’t left much money in my pocket but there were still a few coins.
