Gold was first discovered by James Marshall at Sutter`s Mill – tried to keep it secret Soon a lot of prospectors arrived to find gold Many of them made a lot of money – they panned for gold – put gravel and water into a pan – gold is heavy and so stayed at the bottom of the pan Many mining camps were founded – grew into towns – some stayed, some were abandoned CC PD,
