4 In Middle Ages… …housing of the rich was totally different from housing of the poor: noble men had their castles to live in landowners lived in big farmhouses or forts monks and nuns lived in monasteries and convents Tradesmen built their houses (usually of two floors) to live in and run their trade at the same time e.g. pub owners, bakers, blacksmiths etc. Millers lived in their mill houses. 5 In modern times… …towns grew larger and the need of cheap housing increased. Town houses of three or more floors with flats to rent were built. Many castles were rebuilt into more comfortable chateaus or palaces. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/

6 In the 19th century… …long lines of terraced houses were built for factory workers. They were simple with two bedrooms upstairs and a toilet outside in the back yard. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/

7 In the 20th century… …the need to save space in towns and cities made the builders design buidings taller and taller. The Empire State Building in New York with 102 floors was finished in 1931 and being 381 metres high was the tallest building of the world for 40 years. Since 1973 the highest skyscraper in the USA has been the Willis Tower(former Sears Tower) in Chicago. 8 Nowadays… …there are different types of housing
Nowadays… …there are different types of housing. On the outskirts of towns new housing estates have been being built. There are not only big blocks of flats but also green areas and playgrounds for children. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/

9 However many people prefer living in houses: terraced houses in towns detached or semi-detached houses in residential areas or suburbs detached houses, bungalows or cottages with gardens in the country. Whatever type of housing we have, we cannot imagine life today without central heating, running cold and hot water,a fully fitted kitchen and bathroom. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/
