2 After Edward`s death… Edward died childless in spring 1066 – had promised English throne to William, the Duke of Normandy The Witan chose an English nobleman Harold to be the King The King of Norway also wanted the English throne William decided to fight x could not cross the Channel / no wind

3 Battle at Hastings The King of Norway landed in the north
Harold marched north and defeated his army Meanwhile, William with his soldiers crossed the Channel and landed in the south Harold with his army had to march south to meet him ( 250 miles in 10 days ) 13th October battle at Hastings – Norman soldiers were faster on horseback and they were more dangerous with bows and arrows than the English ( battle axes )

4 Battle at Hastings Harold`s army was exhausted
Harold died in the battle – the battle was over William the Conqueror - the first Norman king on the English throne – crowned in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1066 William`s brother ordered the Bayeux Tapestry – shows King Harold being hit in the eye with an arrow

6 William on the throne The Normans built 500 castles in the first year – to scare the Saxons and to provide safe place for soldiers As a reward for the victory at Hastings – soldiers got land in England – promised to fight for the king and to pay taxes Domesday Survey – records – information about landowners ( type of land, animals they kept, how much money they made etc. ) = Domesday Book
