2 Roman invasions to Britain
The Romans ruled Gaul ( present France ) In 55 B.C. Julius Caesar led the army across the sea from Gaul to Britain – not successful In 54 B.C. Caesar came back with 30,000 soldiers – surprised at chariots in battles – captured one hill-fort – returned to Rome In 43 A.D. Emperor Claudius sent 4 legions to invade Britain – conquered the southern half of Britain – part of the Roman Empire

3 Traces of Roman rule in Britain
Hadrian`s wall – north of England – 73 miles long, 18 feet high and 8 feet thick. It had 80 castles and towers every 540 yards. It protected the Romans from wild Celtic tribes living in the north Roads all over England and Wales – a net of roads led over hill and mountains through the whole country and ended at Hadrian`s Wall Latin language – many Latin words became part of Old English language

6 Rebellion In 61 A.D. there was a big rebellion against the Roman rule
The king of Iceni tribe Prasutagus died and left half of his kingdom to the Roman Emperor and half to his wife Boudicca The Romans wanted all the kingdom and treated Boudicca and her daughters badly – stole land and domestic animals Boudicca made a big army and fought back – burned Colchester( capital of Roman Britain ) and London In the end the Romans won – better trained Boudicca and her daughters drank poison and died
