The Black Cat (1845) *1 is told from the point of view of a man who gradually loses his sanity and commits a terrible crime. The story starts in prison where the narrator recounts his crime. he has always loved animals more than anything. When he married, he was very young and he was happy that his wife loved all of their animals as much as he did. They had all sorts of birds, goldfish and a dog and a cat. The cat Pluto was his favourite.

The Black Cat (1845) *2 However, the narrator was slowly changing because of the alcohol. He was not the kind, loving person people knew before. He grew more and more selfish. he even hit his wife sometimes. He also hit their animals, and he also took knife from his pocket and cut out one of cat´s eyes. Then he caught the cat and hung him by his neck from a tree until he was dead. When he was sitting in the drinking house, he noticed another cat – it was a black cat with a large shape on its front.

The Black Cat (1845) *3 He was now a very different man. There was not the smallest piece of good left in him. Once he was so angry that he wanted to cut the animal in two by the axe. Instead of the cat, he killed his wife because she tried to prevent him from killing the cat. He had to hide the body and he decided to hide the body in one of the walls of the cellar. Everything looked as before and nobody would notice that there was a dead body hidden in the wall. He could not even find the black cat and he was glad that the cat disappeared because the cat was bringing him bad luck.

The Black Cat (1845) *4 When the police came on the fourth day, he was not scared at all. He even knocked hard on the part of the wall where his wife was. Suddenly, a voice came out from inside the wall, in answer to his knock. It was a cry, like child’s. Quickly it grew into a long scream of pain and horror. The police began breaking down the wall. There was his wife standing inside. And there was also the cat standing on her head, his red mouth wide open in a scream, and his one gold eye shining like fire, his wife was dead because of him and now his evil voice was sending the narrator to the gallows.

The Black Cat (1845) *5 the narrator killed his wife in a fit of anger when she tried to stop him from killing the cat the cat’s scream brought the police to the place where the body was buried you cannot escape your past and no crime will go unpunished. Alcohol can drive people to insanity and murder black cat brings bad luck Pluto is ominous because in Roman mythology Pluto is the god of the underworld. In this, Pluto is a symbol of death
