3 Did you know? - The population of the USA is about 307 million people.
- The United States cover the area twice as big as the states of the EU. - It is the third largest country by size (after Russia and Canada). - The highest point is Mt. McKinley (6 194 m) - Alaska. - The lowest point is Death Valley (-86 m) - California. - There are 50 states in the USA. The Mississippi River originates in Minnesota and is the largest river in N. America. Every US state has its nickname, some states even written on the license plate. (Arizona = Grand Canyon state, California = Golden state, Florida = Sunshine state) - There is no official language although the majority of people speak English. Washington D. C. is the seat of the Congress (Capitol) and the President (White House). The President is the head of state and government and has executive power. The President is elected every four years and can serve maximum of eight years. The Congress is divided into Senate and House of Representatives and has legislative power. The first president of the United States was George Washington (1789 – 1797). The Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on 4th of July 1776. The two main political parties are Democratic and Republican Party. The supreme law of the United States is the Constitution.
