2 CHRISTMAS Christmas starts on 24th December - on Christmas Eve. Families decorate their houses with brightly coloured paper, paper balls and chains etc. They of course decorate the Christmas tree. They send the Christmas cards wishing Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Shops are opened until late in the evening. Carrols are played almost everywhere.

3 CHRISTMAS Children hope that at night Santa Claus or Father Christmas will come down the chimney and bring some presents for them. There are X-mas stockings hanging from their beds and presents are under the tree. Children get up very early in the morning to open their presents.

4 CHRISTMAS 24th December – CHRISTMAS EVE25th December - CHRISTMAS DAY26 th December – BOXING DAY

5 CHRISTMAS Christmas Day – families have Christmas dinner usually in the evening. They have roast turkey, potatoes and vegetables. Then they have Christmas pudding. Boxing Day – it is the second Christmas holidays named after the tradition of giving dustmen, newspaper boys, milkmen, postmen etc. small sums of money in boxes.

6 N EW YEAR ' S EVE On New Year's Eve people go to parties. They stay up till midnight to see the old year out and drink a toast to the New Year. They gather in squares, link arms and sing Auld Lang Syne (it means that old days has gone.)
