3 History  The first Ancient Olympics were held in 776 B.C.  The first modern Olympics were held in Athens in 1896 - it was a huge success, - 250 athletes represented 14 countries  First winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France in 1924

4 Ancient Olympics  featured mainly athletics but also combat sports (wrestling) and horse racing  winners were given an olive tree wreath

5 Important dates 1923 - the famous emblem of five colored rings was adopted, representing the five continents of the competing nations 1928 - women were allowed to compete for the first time 1972 - 11 members of Israeli team were kidnapped and killed by terrorists 1980 - USA boycotted the games in Moscow 1984 – the Soviet Union boycotted games in Los Angeles
