Obsahuje přehled základní informací o politickém systému dané země. Osvojení učiva je ověřováno pomocí cvičení vyžadujícího doplnění chybějících části textu. 3 The UK΄s government the UK is a constitutional monarchy in practice as a parliamentary democracy the Monarch (the Queen) is officially the head of the country the government runs the country with the Prime Minister as its head the UK is united under one government which decides about defence and foreign affairs Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland –separate parliaments, more control over their countries, England has no separate parliament (the UK΄s government) the UK΄s government is based in the Houses of Parliament in London’s Westminster.

5 The UK΄s government the UK΄s government consists of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Queen. the agreement of all the three elements is needed to pass a law (the Queen΄s agreement is a matter of course) all these parts of the government meet together just on symbolic occasions (The State Opening of Parliament)

6 The House of Commons lower house of the parliament represented by the members of parliament (MPs) who were elected at a general election usually members of political parties, the party with the majority of seats constitutes the government the leader of the winning political party becomes the Prime Minister is law making body and decides about laws, tax and debate the major issues of the day 643 members of the House of Commons

9 The Prime Minister the leader of the government, the leader of the party with majority of seats in the House of Commons appoints ministers, manages the government, once a week, the Prime Minister appears in the House of Commons to answer questions presented by parliament members at present: David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative party lives at Number 10 Downing Street, Chequers- non-London residence in the country

13 The Queen the head of the country but not directly responsible for governing the UK (government) represents the country: visits abroad, invites world leaders to the UK the Head of the armed forces: declares if the UK is at war and when the war is over the Head of the Church of England: appoints archbishops and bishops signs important documents from the government represents the country at a time of sorrow and celebration travels all over the country: visits schools, factories, hospitals etc. Royal garden parties: three times a year, at Buckingham palace
