Obsahuje základní informace o dané zemi a interaktivní prvky usnadňující porozumění. Osvojení předložených informací je ověřováno pomocí otázek v závěrečné „role play“, která testuje schopnost prezentovat základní informace o dané zemi. Materiál je primárně zaměřen na dva poslední ročníky gymnázia, i přesto se dá využít i v nižších ročnících osmiletého i čtyřletého studia vcelku nebo jeho jednotlivé části. 3 The United Kingdom The official name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland The UK is an island country situated north-west of mainland Europe The country occupies an area of 224 805 sq km: nearly 99% is land and the rest is inland water Most of the people in the UK do not live more than 120 km from the sea.

4 What countries constitute the UK? Many people use the words Great Britain, the UK, the British Isles incorrectly, which may lead to confusion. Great Britain and the UK are not synonyms Great Britain is the larger of the two major islands of the British Isles and it is made up of England, Wales and Scotland The UK includes not only Great Britain but also Northern Ireland (Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK) The British Isles refers to two large islands: Great Britain and Ireland + about 5000 small islands

8 Geography of the UK The UK is surrounded by four seas:  the North Sea to the east  the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the west  the English Channel to the south The English Channel separates the UK from continental Europe The Irish Sea separates Great Britain from Ireland The only land border is between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland

23 Climate and weather in the UK Popular belief that it rains almost every day is rather inaccurate The UK is an island country- its weather is influenced by the surrounding sea= a varied climate modified by the Gulf Stream- warm summers and cool winters In the UK, summers are cooler and winters are milder than on the continent temperate maritime: mild with temperatures not much lower than 0°C in winter and not much higher than 32°C in summer, damp

24 Climate and weather in the UK difficult to predict: really changeable It is hard to say what the weather will be like from one day to another: sunny weather can change into heavy rain very quickly July and August as the warmest months but also the wettest February as the coldest month The best time to travel: May, June, September and October: less rain and pleasant temperatures
