Australia - history The first people in Australia were Aborigines. They probably came to Australia 50 000 years ago. They did not build houses and they hunted the animals and collected food from the land. About half a million Aborigines live in Australia today. Australia became a British colony. In 1770 Captain James Cook discovered Australia and claimed it for Britain. Soon after that – in 1788 – the first ship with British settlers reached the Australian shores. Most of the settlers were criminals because they got the dangerous trip to Australia as their punishment. They named the first settlement Sydney.
