EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0154 3 History of flying Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci, a renaissance artist, scientist and inventor, was fascinated by the flight of birds, studied it and constructed a flying machine which he tested (unsuccessfully) in 1496. He also constructed the first parachute.

On Montgolfier brothers the 4 th July 1783 Montgolfier brothers demonstrated their flight in Paris. airships Balloons couldn´t be controlled so the next step in flying were airships with engines. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0154 4 Ferdinand von Zeppelin The most famous constructor of airships was Ferdinand von Zeppelin who built and flew his first airship in 1900. Unfortunately, airships were unsafe and there was a danger of explosion or fire in result of engine failure. The end of the airship era came in New Jersey on 6 th May 1937 after the disaster of Hindenburg airship which burnt down and all 35 passengers died.

It flew 36 metres in 12 seconds. 25 th July 1909 Luis Bleriot Another important date in the history of flying was 25 th July 1909 when Luis Bleriot crossed the English Channel by plane in 37 minutes. 6 SPŠ stavební a Obchodní akademie, Kladno, Cyrila Boudy 2954 Jan Kašpar The pioneer of Czech aviation was Jan Kašpar (1883 – 1927). 13 th May 1911 He realized his first 2 kilometres long flight in 1910, but it was his long distance flight from Pardubice to Prague on 13 th May 1911 that made him famous. In the 1960s Jumbo jet Boeing 747 with 416 seats was developed, followed by airbuses in the 1970s. supersonic airplane ConcordBritish Airways and Air France Perhaps the most ambitious project was that of a supersonic airplane Concord developed in cooperation of British Airways and Air France in 1976. It was able to cross the Atlantic in 3 hours. However, it was too expensive to run and maintain, and the production was stopped in 1979. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0154 7

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Russian mathematics teacher Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) was the first to draw up plans for space stations and to calculate the speed of a future space rocket. He also knew that a liquid fuel would be essential. Robert Goddard 1926 Independently, American scientist Robert Goddard (1882-1945) developed liquid fuelled rockets from 1926. The Russians were the first to launch the first satellite Sputnik Sputnik onto the orbit in 1957. The first man in space was also a Russian – Yuri Gagarin Yuri Gagarin. It was on 12 th April 1961. Neil The Americans were the first to land on the Moon in 1969. Astronauts Neil ArmstrongEdwin Aldrin Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first people to walk on the Moon, Michael Collins Michael Collins backing them. EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0154 9

He flew into space on 2 nd March 1978. The Chinese sent their first astronaut onto the orbit in 2003.
