4 America covers an area of 9,160,454 sq km It has more than 250 million inhabitants The U.S. is a federal republic which consists of 50 states and the District of Columbia, each of them is specific and different from the others

5 The American flag called “Stars and Stripes“ became national pride in 1777 and since then 50 white stars symbolize the number of states nowadays and 13 stripes of red and white represent the original number of states.

6 The USA is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean from the East and the Pacific Ocean from the West

7 Main Cities The Capital of the U.S. is Washington D.C. The Capitol, the seat of House of Representatives and the Senate

8 New York City - is the city of extremes and skyscrapers - the largest city of the U.S. - Manhattan Island is one of the most important finacial centres in the world - it was built on the plan of streets and avenues, they have numbers instead of names (5th Avenue)

11 The diversity in the U.S. The countryside in the U.S. is very diverse. There are lakes (Ontario, Erie, Michigan, Huron, Superior) as well as mountains (Appalachian, Rocky) and rivers (Mississippi, Missourri) National Parks ( Yellowstone, Grand Canyon)

12 The population The Americans are very often called “the nation of immigrants“, “a salad bowl“ or “the melting pot“. It means that the inhabitants came from the various parts of the world and brought their culture with themselves.

13 All ethnic groups were „americanized“, they went through the process of so called „Americanization“ very easily and assimilated in the U.S. This is why America is multicultural and ethnically rich society.

15 American English English is regarded as the official language and tends to be mixed with other languages, simplified or modified. -Influenced by the ethnic minorities, it often changes or has different pronunciation -Simpler in spelling: traveling – travelling/BrE favorite – favourite/BrE L.A.
