There are several reasons for these changes:  growing number of the American population  influence of the US films and television  the USA became the world´s superpower  growing number of accents and dialects in both Great Britain and the Unites States  continuous changes in the vocabulary of young people in both countries  AmE uses more words from 19th century English (cowboys, settlers)  attempt to differentiate slightly both varieties of English 4 areas with the most distinctive differences between BrE and AmE: 1.Vocabulary 2.Grammar 3.Spelling 4.Pronunciation EU peníze školám CZ.1.07/1.5.00/34.0154 3

Very often AmE and BrE adopt words mutually (f. e.: mail). What are the British equivalents? The most significant are the following:  Past simple X Present perfect: AmE often uses the past simple where BrE uses the present perfect instead: BrE: Have you found him yet? AmE: Did you find him yet?  Have X Have got: have got is typical for informal communication in BrE. AmE uses simple have instead: BrE: Have you got any money left? AmE: Do you have any money left?  Past participle of ´get´: BrE: We´ve never got to know him. AmE: We´ve never gotten to know him.  Word order: BrE: I´ve been waiting for half an hour. The developement of different spelling in both languages is mainly caused by growing of the world press  new, usually shorter forms are produced. Several examples of different spelling: BrE: jewellery  AmE: jewelry BrE: realise  AmE: realize BrE: favourite  AmE: favorite BrE: theatre  AmE: theater What are the British variants?
