Jan Saudek ´s life born in Prague as a Jewish during the 2nd WW kept in a concentration camp with his twin brother Karel, they both survive Karel became a famous comix drawer later Jan studied a graphic school, then worked for a printer (till 1983), started to paint, draw and take pictures

inspired by Edward Steichen´s exhibition 1963 first exhibition in Prague decides to become a photographer, inspired by Edward Steichen´s exhibition catalogue book „The family of Man“ wants to make a book about people of his own time, photographs only people that he is personally connected with 1966 takes his most favourite photograph called LIFE

1969 travels to the U.S.A. has first solo exhibition at the University of Indiana, Bloomington after return he has problems with the authorities, gets divorced 1972 discovers his famous „wall“ which he uses as a background for his pictures
In the 70s works together with various European and American artists starts tinting black and white prints

In the 80s 1983 the first monograph The World of Jan Saudek appears in English, German and French 1984 stops working in a factory, he is given a work permit as a photographer becomes a member of the Unity of Czech Artists exhibits in the Galerie Torch in Amsterdam

2000 - now gets award Artis Bohemiae Amicis from the hands of Secretary of Culture together with writers Vladimír Körner and Milan Kundera

His work mainly hand-tinted black- and-white images shows dreamlike experiences and grotesque allegories of human foibles and fantasies erotical and sentimental his theatrical settings including himself, family members and friends of all ages are considered shocking, kitschy or exploitative (vykořisťující) on the other hand also considered as addressing the core themes of human life—ageing, sexuality and gender relations
Themes - evocation of childhood - evolution from child to adult - religious motives or the ambiguity between man and woman
His permanent exhibition Jan Saudek Gallery in Celetna Street number 1, which is located in the city center, almost on the Old Town Square. The entrance fee is 140 Czk full price, 80 Czk reduced and the gallery is opened daily from 10 am to 8 pm documentary movie about Jan Saudek by Adolf Zika called V Pekle svych vasni, raj v nedohlednu
