Parachute Definition: Parachute = device used to slow the motion of an object through the atmosphere Material: light, strong cloth silk (originally) Nylon Qualification: Parachute has to slow an object‘s vertical speed by a minimum of 75%
Types of parachutes Round-type parachutes Ram-air-type parachutes Military, emergency, cargo use Former types suffered from oscillations (= user swinging back and forth) Hole in the apex reduced them Army – parabolic shapes ‚Ram-air‘ airfoil called parafoil Control of speed and direction Two layers of fabric – connected by airfoil shaped fabric ribs forming “cells”
