The great fire in London The old city of London was very different from today´s city. It had narrow, crooked streets and most of buildings were made of wood. It was dirty and dangerous city too. People threw all rubbish into the streets . There were rats everywhere. In 1666 everything changed. Do you know what happened?
The Great fire In the evening of the second September 1666 Thomas Farynor was in his bakery in Pudding Line near London Bridge. He was making some bread. After putting loaf of bread into the oven, he went to bed. His assistant had to look after bread. The assistant fell asleep too. At two o´clock in the morning a bakery was on a great fire. The fire spread very quickly ,because summer was very hot and all was dry. There was strong wind and blew the fire from place to place. A lot of buildings caught fire.
Most of the city was destroyed, because the fire burned for four days Most of the city was destroyed, because the fire burned for four days. People lost their houses and they had to build a new city. The new streets were wide, straight, clean and safer. The houses were made of bricks or stone. Near London Bridge is built the Monument to Great Fire.
