3  English language is more or less special with the use of so called phrasal verbs – verbs + preposition(s) where the meaning is often hard or impossible to guess.  This presentation introduces three very common verbs  BELOOKGET  used as phrasal verbs.

4 Phrasal Verbs I  BE + preposition  + INShe‘s in.= inside her home / office  + ONWhat‘s on?= What‘s on the programme?  + OFFI am off to bed.= I am going to bed.  The milk is off.= It can‘t be used anymore.  + INTOHe‘s into horses. = He is interested in horses.  + AWAYHe is away on holiday.= … away from here.  + UPWhat‘s up? = What is going on?  + UP TOWhat are they up to? = What are they getting ready for?  It is up to you.= You must make a decision.

5 Phrasal Verbs I  LOOK + preposition  + AFTERCan you look after my dog? = take care of …  + ATLoot at me, please.= directly at me  + FORI‘m looking for my pen.= I want to find it.  + FORWARD TO She is looking forward to hearing from you soon.  = she expects with pleasure  + LIKEShe looks like her mother= She resembles her mother.  + INTOThe police are looking into the case.  = investigating  + OUTLook out!= Watch out!  + sth. UPI must look it up in a dictionary.= search and find 

6 Phrasal Verbs I  GET + preposition  + UPI get up at 6 am.= I leave my bed.  + ACROSSThe teacher got across the problem.  = The teacher explained the problem.  + ON / INGet on a bus / train / plane / boat  Get in a car / taxi= on board / inside  + OUT / OFFGet off the a bus / train / plane / boat.  Get out of a car / taxi.= leave it  + RID OFI must get rid of it.= remove it  + OVERShe got over all her troubles. = She overcame them.  + OUT OFWe can‘t get out of it.= We cannot escape.  + AWAYThe injured dog got away.= it escaped.  + AWAY WITHThey got away with a new model.  = They were successful with a new model.
