4 New Zealand It is situated in the southern hemisphere, in the south-western Pacific Ocean, south- east off Australia.

5 Population: about 4 million Area: 268,000 sq.km Capital: Wellington Currency: New Zealand dollar Head of State: British Monarch (Elizabeth II) represented by the Governor General

6 NEW ZEALAND It consists of North and South Islands separated by narrow Cook Strait. Stewart Island and many small islands, both populated and unpopulated, lie around the coast.

7 The New Zealand flag It has a royal blue background with the Union Jack (the flag of the UK) and four red five- pointed stars that represent the Southern Cross constellation.

8 Short History The first settlers came from eastern Polynesia – the Maoris, they came on boats. At about 1350, during the great migration,7 big canoes landed (Hakarewarea canoes) and by the end of the 14th century they settled almost the whole country. They are famous for their artistic skills and military strength.

10 1642 – Dutch navigator Abel Tasman reached the land and the islands were called Niew Zeeland. However, the Dutch didn´t take care of their colony. 1769 – British naval explorer James Cook landed at the eastern coast of North Island and New Zealand got under the rule of George III. During his first landing the Maoris fought, during the second one, further to the north, he was welcomed friendlier. He really explored the country. 1840- Captain William Hobson signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the Maori northern chiefs (they were promised to get the land, however, a lot of misunderstandings and the Maoris became the citizens of the second category). 1907 – a dominion in the British Empire. 1931 – full independence, formally excepted in 1947. Now independent member of the Commonwealth.

11 People The Maoris make up about 15 per cent of the population, they live in different tribes. Many Maoris also have tattoos over their faces and other parts of their bodies while important women often have chin tattoos.

12 People The majority of people live in North Island (there is a mild climate and economic potential). People speak English and in some areas their native language.
