4 USA – location and borders, climate, geography LOCATION AND BORDERS  The USA covers more than 9,5 million square kilometers. It is the fourth largest state (we think area – rozloha) in the world after Russia, Canada and China.  The USA borders on (sousedí s) two states: Canada in the north and Mexico in the south. In the west there is the Pacific Ocean and in the east border on the Atlantic Ocean.  The United States of America is federal state with 50 states, 48 are together and Alaska with Hawaii are situated out of them. Alaska is on the northern part of the continent and it borders on Canada and Russia. The Hawaii is 3000 km southwest of California.

5 USA – location and borders, climate, geography LOCATION AND BORDERS  There is also one district, District of Columbia – so this territory is not state, it is the area of the capital city Washington.CLIMATE  The USA lies in the moderate ( = temperate- mírné) climate zone and the climate is determinated by ocean. Only in central part there is mostly a continental climate with great temperature differences between summer and winter or day and night. There are too differences between east cost with more rainy weather and west coast with dry and hot weather and soft winters.

PLAINS (nížiny) Coastal Plain ( Pobřežní nížina) Atlantic Plain (Atlantská nížina) Gulf Plain Mississipi Plain  The Atlantic Plain  The Atlantic Plain lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the foothills (úpatí) of the Appalachians. the Gulf Plain  Another part of the Coastal Plain is the Gulf Plain which lies along the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Plain has large deposits of petroleum. New Orleans and Houston are major cities in the Gulf Plain.

PLAINS (prérie) Interior Plains Central Plains (Centrální prérie) )Great Plains (Velké prérie) the Interior Plains  Between the Rocky Mountains in theWest and the Appalachians in the East there is a large plain (prérie) area called the Interior Plains (has got 2 parts: the Great Plains, the Central Plains). the Great Plains  The dry, western part of the Interior Plains is called the Great Plains (Velké prérie). This treeless plateau (rovina, planina, plošina) gently rises from the Central Plains to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
