4 Transport and vehicles
The land transport includes: rail transport – it needs railway tracks, road transport – it needs roads and highways, off-road transport – it can use a variety of surfaces. Do you know… ? Modern high-speed rail is capable of speeds up to 350 km/h (220 mph), but this requires specially built track. Obr. 1

6 Off-road transport Off-roading is driving or riding a vehicle on roads or tracks, made of materials such as sand, gravel, mud, snow, rocks and other natural terrain. Famous off-road vehicles are: all-terrain vehicle (ATV), also known as a quad, quad bike, or four-wheeler and sport utility vehicle (SUV). Obr. 5

7 Driving a car Drivers must keep rules of the road while driving.
The basic rule is to use the left or right side of the road. Traffic is controlled by traffic lights and signs. There are speed limits on the roads. Everybody needs a driving licence. Obr. 6 Obr. 7

8 Around the car At the front of the car is the dashboard with the instrument panel. The steering wheel is on the left-hand side of the car. This side of the car is called „offside“. To the right of the driver seat is the front passenger´s seat. This side of the car is called the „nearside“. The gear stick is placed between the two front seats and there is also the handbrake. In the middle of the car and above the windscreen, there is the rear-view mirror.
