Tomáš Garigue Masaryk became the first Czech president in 1918 Democratic and economic progress was interrupted in 1039 (Hitler invaded the country and declared the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia). After Second World War in 1948 the communists gained power, Czechoslovakia became a totalitarian state. In 1989 after a peaceful revolution Czechoslovakia became a democracy with a plural systém of government. In 1993 the Czechoslovak Republic broke up two new countries ( Czech Republic, Slovakia). VY_32_INOVACE_1.3.AJ3,4.06/Kl Answers and Teacher´s Notes: 1) In February, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia was supported by the Soviet Union, gained control of teh Czechoslovak government. Heavy political pressure and threats of violence forced President Beneš first to appoint Communist ministers and then to resign Klement Gottwald succeded him as president.. 2) During the 60s, tough regime somewhat loosened. In 1968 the reformist politician Alexander Dubček came to power and introduced a new programme. Censorship disappeared and it became easier to get the necessary permissions to travel. This era of liberalization was known as the Prague Spring. 3) The reforms worried the USSR and the Soviets sent a Warsaw Pact army to Czechoslovakia. It arrived on August 20-21and mostly non-violent resistance was soon supressed by the soldiers. The Soviet army was stationed in Czechoslovakia and reforms were abandoned. In 1969, students Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc protested against the invasion by committing suicide through setting thenselves on fire. Between more than 100,000 people left the country before the borders were closed again. 4) A demonstration ws organised by students on the 50th anniversary of the Nazi closure of universities, and as a tribute to Jan Opletal´s death. The protest, starting in Albertov, was supposed to end in Vyšehrad. Howerer, the majority of people headed from Vyšehrad towards the centre of Prague.
